Finding the Way – Events !

Swift NickWe are organising various events in Warwickshire too – an  exhibition is planned  for Shipston on Stour Museum and at Long Compton, to explain the significance of milestones and the progress of our restoration of the six cast iron mileposts on the Long Compton turnpike. We are also available to give talks to local organisations. Artistic interpretations, photography or written work from local students and pupils would be greatly welcomed!

Our authentic Highwayman enactor has been booked for Long Compton Fete on 1st July – he will enthral young and old alike with his tales of derring-do and his weaponry. You can find more details of our activities here:

And on Saturday 7th October 2017, the Milestone Society will be holding its Annual Conference at Long Compton Village Hall.

Speakers will include:

  • Ann King on Postal History; before the introduction of the uniform postal rate in 1840, the cost of postage was paid by the recipient, depending on the distance travelled – milestones were a useful way of measuring this.

  • a special guest from Write Out Loud to talk about the Poetry Competition and read the winning entries… everyone welcomed, an event not to be missed.

We have walks planned around the area, taking in the sites of the restored mileposts; again, experienced walk leaders would be welcomed in setting these up and testing the routes. Have a look at the draft leaflet with the proposed routes (click images below). Any comments would be valued on our facebook group page.
